Spring 2022 unconference:

Education as the practice of freedom

We invite you to join us for our 2022 Spring Unconference on Saturday March 5th. Our theme, “Education as the practice of freedom,” honors the work of the late great bell hooks, who understood teaching to be a catalyst for radical change. As educators working to build our collective capacity to be anti-racist leaders, we believe that our schools must be a place to work towards collective freedom.

According to the essay hooks published in 1994, “Love as the Practice of Freedom,” this work requires centering an awareness of our blind spots to “critically interrogate our locations, the identities and allegiances that inform how we live our lives.” Following hooks’s legacy, our Spring Unconference focuses on the opportunity we have to “move against domination, against oppression,” and to “begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others.” When we build our capacity to recognize this opportunity, we empower our learning communities to engage “education as the practice of freedom.
