Our Mission

we believe IN THE POWER OF EDUCATORS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

MISSION STATEMENT

Educators in Solidarity is a group working to build our collective capacity as anti-racist educators through activism, advocacy, and outreach. Educators are uniquely situated to address racism through institutional change and by supporting the self-advocacy of students, families, and communities. We are committed to practicing ongoing reflection about our own racial identities and engaging in dialogue about the systemic racism in our schools and communities.

our approach

We are allies of Black and Brown-led organizations in our communities. Our current partner organizations include Austin Justice Coalition, Texas Appleseed, MEASURE, Drop the Charges Coalition, Round Rock Black Parents Association, Austin Area Association for Bilingual Educators (AAABE), Creative Action, Brave Communities, Equality Texas, and Pride of the Eastside. EIS defines partnership as collaborating on campaigns or events, sharing calls to action, and offering support as requested (time, volunteers, financial, etc.). Any partnership formed must be mutual, and include a conversation with the outside organization to determine if a partnership is beneficial or desired.

As an organization, we commit to ensuring that Educators in Solidarity is accessible to anyone who wishes to join us, and to creating a path to membership that is easy to obtain and maintain. We will make decisions in a transparent and open fashion, and interact both internally and externally in a manner that is consistent with our anti-racist mission. We plan to grow as an organization by actively recruiting teachers and members, and by supporting future educators and those on the path to serving in education. We believe that we should avoid duplicating efforts by allying with other organizations that are already working in areas of unity, and in seeking to grow their efforts, as well as amplifying marginalized voices whenever possible in our events. We support students and families, uplift their leadership, and advocate for them whenever appropriate and possible.

We believe that we cannot approach our work without a historical understanding of how racist and capitalist systems continue to impact students and families. We stand in solidarity with all struggles that uphold collective liberation and cooperation. As educators, our interests in our students extend beyond the walls of our homes and our classrooms, and thus in our lives and our work we are dedicated to struggles and movements that build power and are rooted in racial, gender, economic, environmental, disability, and LGBTQIA+ justice.

our core principles.

We stand together behind a set of beliefs for addressing racism through institutional change.
